1. Brief

The Shift complex focuses on the flexibility and fluidity of spaces. The notion of adaptability is central to the development of a sustainable construction in a city where temperature can range from -20ºC to 30ºC. Its design, both in terms of shape and materials, takes into account the drastic climatic variations that occur along the year. Double-glazed windows, insulated walls and roofs, along with the thermal mass beneath the floors are passive energy strategies that work in combination with the phovoltaic panels to enhance the efficiency of the complex.
Shift consists of three residential units that accommodate families of two, four and six on a 1000m2 lot, located in downtown Toronto. The activities surrounding the site are mixed: art galleries, convenience stores, restaurants, residences and a school. Most of the commercial activities take place on the main avenue, (to the West side of the site) on the ground level of each building. The upper levels are dedicated to offices and residential units.
